A great designer works hard, earns their place, gets promoted, and walks away with a shiny new title: Creative Director. Everyone claps. Everyone expects things to change. And then… nothing really does.<\/p>\n
They’re not doing anything wrong. The company just gave them a new title without giving them a new role.<\/p>\n
Creative Direction is not design with more experience. It is a completely different job. And until we start treating it that way, we’ll keep setting good people up to fail.<\/p>\n
Adam Harrell puts it well: the role is about connecting ideas, strategy, and execution into one clear vision. Not making visuals \u2014 defining the direction behind them. A Creative Director is making decisions before the first sketch even exists. What does this work need to say? Who is it really for? What should it make people feel?<\/p>\n
And as Michael Bierut reminds us \u2014 every color, layout, and word choice sends a message, whether you planned it or not. If nobody is making those decisions on purpose, the brand makes them by accident. Accidental brands don’t build trust.<\/p>\n
\nA designer asks: Does this look good?
A Creative Director asks: Does this actually work?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nOne question is about craft. The other is about consequence. Both matter \u2014 but they are not the same job.<\/p>\n
A real Creative Director protects the vision when budget pressure wants to cut corners. They stop a project and say “this brief doesn’t make sense yet” when everyone else just wants to start. They say no when the work isn’t good enough, even when that’s uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
So if your brand feels scattered \u2014 if the work looks beautiful but isn’t landing \u2014 ask yourself one honest question: does someone actually own the direction? Not the execution. The direction.<\/p>\n
A title without real authority isn’t Creative Direction. It’s just a senior designer with a fancier business card. And that person deserves better.<\/p>\n
\nIf you’re a CEO:<\/strong> Hire for vision, not just taste.
\nIf you’re a design manager:<\/strong> Understand the business, not just the brief.
